Last updated: July 2026. These three are the general-purpose assistants most people actually use, and the honest answer to “which is best” is that they’ve converged on capability and diverged on where they live. The deciding factor is usually your existing stack, not a benchmark.

Short answer
- You live in Google Workspace: Gemini. Nothing else reaches your Gmail, Docs and Drive.
- Long documents and sustained writing: Claude — the large context window and Projects are the differentiators.
- Everything else, and the widest ecosystem: ChatGPT — custom GPTs, the biggest third-party ecosystem, and the default most people mean.
ChatGPT — the default, and the broadest
The one most people mean when they say “AI”. Its advantages are breadth rather than any single capability: file and image analysis, web browsing, voice conversation, code execution, and custom GPTs that let you package a recurring job into a reusable assistant. Memory carries context between conversations, which matters more in daily use than it sounds.
If you’re picking one and have no other constraints, this is the safe choice — and its free tier covers most general use.
Claude — long documents and careful writing
The differentiator is holding a lot of material at once. A long report, a contract, or a substantial codebase goes in as one piece rather than being chunked, and the thread doesn’t lose the plot halfway through. Projects keep that context across sessions, so a body of work doesn’t reset each time you come back.
Artifacts produce editable documents and small apps alongside the conversation rather than buried in it. For sustained writing and for reading unfamiliar code, this is the one we reach for most.
Gemini — if you’re already inside Google
Gemini’s real advantage isn’t the model, it’s the access. It drafts inside Gmail and Docs, answers questions about files in your Drive, and is the system assistant on Android. A standalone chatbot simply cannot do that, and for a Workspace organisation it’s usually decisive.
Deep Research is the other reason to use it — a multi-source investigation returned as a structured report rather than a paragraph.
Where each actually falls down
- All three will state something wrong with complete confidence. That hasn’t been solved, and it’s the reason we recommend Perplexity when you need answers you can check against sources, or NotebookLM when the answer must come only from documents you supply.

Do you need to pick one?
