Master a handful of principles and you’ll get dramatically better results from any AI — ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini.

The 5 principles that matter most

  1. Give context. Tell it who you are, who it’s for, and why. “Explain X to a beginner” beats “Explain X.”
  2. Be specific about the output. Length, format, tone, audience. Ask for a table, a list, five options — say exactly what you want.
  3. Assign a role. “Act as an experienced copywriter reviewing this draft” focuses the model.
  4. Show an example. One good example of the style or format you want (“few-shot”) beats paragraphs of description.
  5. Iterate. Treat it as a conversation — refine, correct, and ask it to improve its own answer.
