Canva — the best free tier in software, arguably
Canva’s free plan is genuinely usable rather than a trial, and that’s a large part of why it scores as highly as it does. Templates, the editor and a good chunk of Magic Studio are there without paying. Pro adds the brand kit and premium assets — worth it for a business, unnecessary for occasional use. The limits worth knowing: it isn’t built for professional print, and everything made in it tends to look like it was made in it.
Notion — free for individuals, generously
Docs, wikis, databases and project tracking, free for personal use. The catch isn’t the price, it’s the blank canvas — people bounce off Notion because they start from nothing. Start from a template. Note that Notion AI is a paid add-on billed separately; the base tool is the reason to use it, not the AI.
Grammarly — free covers what most people need
Grammar and spelling on the free tier, everywhere you type. That’s enough for most people, and we’d rather say so than push the upgrade. Premium is for tone adjustment and full-sentence rewrites — genuinely useful if you write for an audience daily, hard to justify otherwise.
Fathom — free meeting notes that aren’t crippled
Actually free and actually good is rare. The core notetaking product costs nothing and isn’t time-limited, and the summaries are the cleanest we tested in that category. Copy.ai — a free plan that does real work
Generous enough to judge whether the short-form output suits you before paying anything, which is more than most writing tools offer. Short copy is its home; don’t expect long-form depth from it.

How to tell a real free tier from a trial
- Is there a clock? “14 days free” is a trial. No expiry is a tier.
- Can you finish a job on it? Watermarked exports and locked downloads mean the free tier is a demo.
- What happens to your data if you stop paying? Check you can export before you commit anything important.
- Is the thing you actually need behind the wall? Free image generation is no use if commercial rights are paid-only.

Are free tools worse?
Not necessarily — several here have free tiers that beat competitors’ paid ones. What free usually costs you is volume, support and commercial rights rather than quality.
